The chief characteristics of postmodern picture books include usually a non-linear plot structure, using pictures or texts to position the reader and focalizing ideas through the point of view of a character, construction of meaning by the reader, intertextual references and above all, the varied design layout and styles of illustration as envisioned by Anstey (2002). This adaptation is both a product and process as seen by Hutcheon (2012). Most of the stories for children are re-told or re-visioned adapting to different socio-cultural, linguistic domains.

This has also led to the notion of cross-reading. New developments in computational field and digital media have opened wider ways of exploring children's stories. Nowadays, children's books are available in various forms like printed books, audio/video recordings, animated movies, Disney cartoons etc. The concept of literature for entertainment along with instruction, as proposed by Peter Hunt, has changed the traditional mode of reading methods and gave new dimensions in reading and experiencing children's books. It has generated new attitudes towards childhood and changing practices around literature. Literature for children has undergone significant changes over the past years. It is my attempt to address the following questions in Potter's, Marsden's, and Tan's visuals: 1) What is the purpose of each picture? 2) Is it narrative, referential, or symbolic? 3) Do the pictures add details to the text that are not in it? 4) Do the pictures leave room for the child's imagination, do they have gaps, or is everything in the text depicted in the pictures? The point of departure is that the analysis relies heavily on the Kress and van Leeuwen theoretical framework of visual semiotics. The picture book, as a potential sign, conveys a narrative through verbal language and visual grammar. The selected Children's picture books – to my knowledge-have not been studied against their fluid textual entity incorporating lexical and visual signs codified in an interaction of word, image, and reader. Illustrations are created by the innovative use of line, shape, color and other aesthetic choices to evoke setting, establish character, convey theme, display information, explain a concept or create a mood.
